How to Make MacBook Pro Appear as an External Storage on a PC

Mac computers include a disk-transfer feature, called Target Disk Mode, that turns your computer into an external FireWire drive. This setting is only compatible with FireWire, so you may need to purchase an adapter if your PC doesn't have a FireWire port. When connected to a Macbook Pro in Target Disk Mode, Windows recognizes the external drive but requires additional software to read the HFS+ partition and exchange files. Disk-reading software opens your Mac drive in a browser window from which you can copy files to your PC.

Instructions
1. Download a disk-reading program, such as MacDrive, TransMac or HFS+ for Windows (links in Resources). Each of these applications has a similar user interface and performs the same funtion. They provide an alternative to File Explorer, with the ability to read and write to Windows and Mac partitions.

2. Connect a FireWire adapter to a USB port on your PC. Turn off your Macbook and connect it to a wall outlet with its charging cable. Disconnect any FireWire devices from your Macbook, then connect its FireWire port to the adapter with a FireWire cable. Your PC can be on when connecting your computers.

3. Turn on your Macbook and hold down the “T” key before your computer boots into OS X. The Target Disk Mode icon is displayed on your Macbook's screen, and an external drive icon appears on your Windows desktop. Double-clicking this icon opens an unusable File Explorer window because Windows isn't compatible with HFS+ partitions.

4 Launch your disk-reading software and select the “HFS+ Volume” in the sidebar. The root directory's folders are displayed in the sidebar, and selecting a folder displays its files and subdirectories in the main window. Drag files from this window to your desktop or open a file directly from the disk-reading program by double-clicking it. Copy files to your Macbook by dragging them to the application window.

5. Close the disk-reading program after exchanging files between your Mac and PC. Right-click the “Removable Drive” icon on your Windows desktop and choose “Eject.” Hold down your Macbook's power button until your Macbook shuts down, then disconnect the FireWire cable from your Mac and PC.
